Turkey's Parliament has approved a bill granting conditional pardons to thousands of Kurdish militants, part of the government's efforts to conclude a peace initiative with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The legislation, passed by a large majority, will take effect only after Turkish authorities confirm the PKK's disarmament. This follows the PKK's announcement last year to cease its armed campaign and dissolve itself as part of the peace process.
The move is a significant step towards ending a conflict that has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties. It is expected to bolster ties between Turkey and Iraq, and support efforts by the Syrian government to integrate Kurdish-controlled areas.
