The Centre has introduced central-bank digital currency for direct benefit transfers under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in Chandigarh. The digital-rupee system is intended to move the food subsidy directly to beneficiaries.

Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria joined Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Pralhad Joshi and Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya at the programme that formally launched the arrangement.

Chandigarh is the first Union Territory to undertake a full rollout of digital-rupee transfers for the food subsidy. The same facility was launched virtually for Dadra and Nagar Haveli from the Chandigarh event. The Centre presented the change as a new stage in direct welfare delivery.
