The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) is set to challenge the Allahabad High Court's decision to dismiss a petition by a student seeking permission to wear a hijab with her school uniform.
The student, a minor from the private Tagore Public School in Prayagraj, is seeking admission to class 11 at the school.
A two-judge bench of Justice J J Munir and Justice Indrajit Shukla dismissed the petition, stating that the petitioner did not establish that wearing a headscarf was an essential religious practice without which her faith would be jeopardized.
AIMPLB member and cleric Khalid Rasheed Firangimahal, speaking to in Lucknow, said the board will approach the court to present their case, emphasizing that hijab is integral to Islam and mentioned in both the Quran and Hadith.
Rasheed also stated that hijab is a globally observed practice by Muslim women, but added that students must adhere to their schools' dress codes.
However, Rasheed acknowledged the potential conflict between following religious obligations and school dress codes, suggesting that students should be allowed to balance both.
