Father Amir of The State of Qatar has passed away on 12.07.2026. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's State Mourning on 13.07.2026 (Monday) throughout India.
The National Flag will be flown at half-mast on the day of mourning throughout India on all buildings where the National Flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day.
The Home Ministry announcement set out two specific observances for 13 July: the national flag was to be flown at half-mast on buildings where it is normally displayed, and no official entertainment was to take place. It did not announce a public holiday or restrictions for private establishments.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as Amir of Qatar from 1995 until 2013, when he transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The title Father Amir reflected his position after that transition.
A state-mourning notice is an executive protocol decision and its practical scope is defined by the government order. In this case, the announced measures concerned the flag and official entertainment for one day across India; the release did not set out any wider closure or service disruption.
The decision also carried diplomatic context. Qatar is an important Gulf partner for India and is home to a large Indian community, while bilateral ties include energy, trade and high-level political engagement. The mourning order was therefore both a domestic protocol instruction and an official mark of respect for a former head of a partner state.
